Don't ever buy Walmart Tealights!!!!!!!

My wonderful Secret Santa from TWW sent me a Yankee Candle warmer with 4 tarts for my Christmas preset! I love it. I wanted to try it out but the only tealights I had was partylite and I didn't want to mess up the scent of the warmer but I found one that was vanilla. I figured that couldn't mess with the scent of the tart too much so I used it. What a wonderful smell! I went to walmart and bought there tealights. They are Mainstays Unscented Tealight candles. Well the first one burned ok, didn't really melt the tart very well. I took a closer look and the tealight doesn't even look like wax 8/ I figured that it must have been faulty and so I tried another one. It didn't even soften the bottom of the tart, not to mention that the flame was TINY! Well I thought maybe I need special warmer tealights so I was just going to use these to put in my partylite nativity scene. These burn so crappy that they only burn a little hole in the what is supposed to be wax ??? Needless to say I am very unhappy with these candles and will NEVER buy them again. I hope someone can read this and not waste there money on this junk. Pics anyone???

  1. I, too, am very disappointed in the Mainstays tealight candles. The scented ones are barely noticeable in the tiny guest bathroom. Other tealights I bought from Bed Bath and Beyond have a much stronger scent even in my large master bedroom! Mainstays candles just suck.

  2. Had the same problem with the Mainstays tealights! Have used them for several years, suddenly they look like they are composed of chalk, not sure what is the white substance mixed in with the wax. The are made in Thailand, so who knows, hope it is not harmful. Bought a flat box of 25 from Walmart today instead, they look like the traditional color and texture of a normal tealight and are made in Vietnam. I called the customer service number to lodge a complaint, they claim they will look into the problem and will call me back with a response.

  3. I hope they do look into it, I have started buying my tealights for my warmer from Yankee candle, At least I know they are real wax not the little white beads of whatever the Mainstays candles are made from. I also like the Partylite Tealights but When I'm using my warmer I want unscented...

  4. URGH! I just bought 12 Mainstay tealights from Walmart - it was only $2.00 for a 16 pack so I thought what a deal!!!! I bought 6 of "fresh cotton" and 6 of "sweet lavendar". I'm trying them both out now and honestly - there is NO scent. Piss me off - I'm returning the unopened tomorrow - what a rip off! Thanks Melissa for this post!

  5. Same thing is happening to my Mainstay tealights. I don't know what kind of wax they are using, but it doesn't burn evenly. It also burns quickly.
I paid $2.50 for 50. The bag is opened, but I'm taking them back.
If anyone finds a good burning, unscented, inexpensive tealight let me know!

  6. got some mainstay tealights from w/m 1/2 of them were no burning s.o.b.'s seems like w/m would find a better item to make thier $2.00 off of and quit screwing the public this is not the 1st batch that performed(not) this way and i am looking elsewheres for tealight "mini" candles for a price close to the same this is not the only product w/m is slacking on what would sam think about shit like this? more of the consumers need to protest and then w/m would see a way to correct things like this "problem" or if enough people bitched the difference in $ coming in would make change in the way things are going w/m needs to buy U.S. made goods NOT cheap shit from thailand

  7. Mainstays USE TO be the best tealights.....In the past year they raised the price and changed the packaging....These tealights SUCK, they are white cake like wax? I am so tired of burning Yankee tarts with these crap candles. I am calling to complain as well. Don't waste your money!

  8. We have bought these tea lights for quite some time and now there is a white residue left and are not burning all the way plus they have started a fire a couple of times. We will not be buying these anymore. If you use, watch them carefully.

  9. They have caught fire to My house twice now burning my fireplace mantle and to my hallway and they do not burn correctly, I guess its true if you buy cheap you get what you buy a candle full of wax and styreofoam beads.
DO NOT BUY THESE CANDLES EVER.... Unless u want your house to burn down!

  10. Two of my current package caught fire.

The flames go up about a foot, and will catch fire to anything that might be in the way.
The first time it happened, I thought it was a crazy fluky incidence.

Last night it caught fire, so of course I went to blow out the flame.
The melted wax splashed out onto my face and now I have a 2nd degree burn.

I lodged a consumer complaint at CSPC, I don't know what to do next, so nobody loses a house or a life!!

  11. BTW, they fixed whatever was wrong with it that the wax didn't burn all the way out. These burn so well, the metal tart pan they're in burns too.

i used to have these other ones from zellers which were larger and they burned longer
these die pretty quickly, and the aluminum holder is pretty crappy too

  13. we have a package of 50... some burn out quickly, some are okay. We have had 4 of them blaze out of control about a foot high, very difficult to blow out. Permanently left soot inside the glass containers. I will be filing a complaint with Walmart and anyone else I can. Thanks for starting this blog and all the other comments.

  14. I too have had a problem with the Mainstay candles. I agree with all the circumstances I have read above. However, I have also had four candles completely CATCH FIRE! I immediately called and put in a complaint to Walmart. They told me "they would be investigating the candles. I then returned unopened and partially used bags today, and there is "nothing" on their computer corporate website on any investigation. I believe there could be a "Large Lawsuit" waiting to happen! That is my personal opinion, that and I will not buy any more Mainstay Brand Candles. And Shame on Walmart!

  15. Ditto with the high flames. I tried to lodge a complaint to Walmart and how dangerous their newest batches of tealights are. Every single one I have tried in succession has burned with a flame of about 6" after about an hour or so resulting in damaged property not to mention burning my hand.

As much as I hate to say it, it is best to stay away from them.

  16. I had two Tealights white color chalk material from Walmart made in Vietnam. I had two of them flare up with fire! They are DANGEROUS and should be recalled. I will return them tommorrow to the store manager for a full refund. Please don buy them. Once they flare up you cannot blow them out.

  17. We had the same thing. Huge flare-ups and it broke two glass tealight holders. We reported them to the consumer product safety commission. You should too.

  18. I've used these tea lights as well. They are garbage and dangerous to boot. I got a video on my iPhone of a huge flare up that could not be blown out and lasted for several minutes. I will upload and post a link to YouTube soon.

  19. I have had several tealights from walmart catch fire too. it seems the brand changed the formula or something about a year ago. now the wax is crumbly and weird. whatever it is they should switch back before someone burns their self up like i almost have.

  20. Your best bet would be to get a bag of 100 Glimma tea lights from IKEA, if you have one near you. They retail for $3.99, but burn clean and leave little-to-no residual wax left in the tin. Perfect for oil warmers, or other unscented candle uses.

  21. I have had the same problem. But not just with Wal-Mart tealights - also with Targets, and almost every one that I buy. They used to last at least 5 hours. Now I am lucky if they last three! I did notice the chalky residue after they burn. We need to all return them, and call customer service # on the package to complain - that is the only way that maybe something will get done! I am tired of wasting my money on this cheap stuff!

  22. WOW what an enormous response!!! Walmart RECALL these tea-lights. How dangerous, I'm thankful with all the flare-ups & fires that no one was hurt!

  23. I had the same EXACT problem with Mainstays, and some of the newer brands of tealight candles! I don't know what they're using now days, but I share the same misery and complaint of these Mainstays burning out way too fast, and not even melting all of the poor quality wax that they are now using. It's just another cheap way of making a profit off of us consumers, but a very quick way to lose business. And, I agree...I hope this page and our complaints will bring further awareness so that people do NOT invest in these cheap dangerous candles!!!

  24. I just recently had a scary problem with a Mainstay tea light. The candle was burning with a very high flame and I could not blow it out. I called my husband in and he had the same problem trying to blow it out. He felt the wax had vaporized and was maintaining the flame on its own. We used a large pot to completely cover the tart burner and deprive the tea light its oxygen--that is what finally put the fire out. I am trying to let people know so that if they have a problem, they will know what to do. I didn't know and am glad that my husband was around to help--could have had a major fire.

  25. I bought a case of mainstay tealights a few years ago and still have some left. Last night I was on my second to last package from that case. One of the candles flared up as karosene does.
At first the flame was normal but after burning an hour with in seconds got out of control. Blowing them out causes the flame to skip to another part of the room. Today, another went out of contro and that was it for me. I took a good look at the tealights and noticed a pink residue around more then half the candles in the package. Looked at the last unopened package and noticed that pink residue was not on those.
I was lucky I had someone here at the time of the fire and no damage was done but this is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

I urge everyone that has these tealights that if you see a pink residue in the wax, Do Not Light Them. Take them back to walmart and buy a different brand. Ive had this case for too long so I cant take mine back after all this time but I will never buy these again.

Walmart needs to be told, the manufacture probably by now knows how dangerous these are but someone is going to end up injured or dead if these do not get pulled asap from shelves.

Any good safe brands out there anyone here can attest too, I'd surely love to hear from you.

Thanks and stay say tart users
